They were the League Leaders at the season end and they triumphed in the Super League Grand Final game against fierce local rivals, the Bradford Bulls, at Old Trafford in October 2004.

Much of they success was down to new Aussie coach Tony Smith's man-management style, together with the home-grown talent already at Headingley such as Danny McGuire plus some successful signings such as Kiwi Ali Lauititi, and Papua New Guinean international Marcus Bai

However, Super League X, the 2005 season, ended in bitter disappointment. After a promising start, including record victories over Wigan and the Bradford Bulls, the Rhinos were defeated in an amazing Challenge Cup Final at the Millennium stadium by Hull conceding the winning score in the dying seconds; they also lost the Leaders Shield to St Helens and the Grand Final in a return match with the Bradford Bulls.
